Debuting in 1992 with Kirby’s Dreamland for the original Game Boy, Kirby has had consistent releases ever since, however most may know Kirby from Super Smash Bros., where he has continued as a mainstay and popular fighter in the series since the first release in 1999. Super Smash Bros. and Kirby share the same creator, Masahiro Sakurai, which may explain why Kirby was the only character among a crowd of equally powerful Nintendo protagonists to evade capture at the beginning of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In the same year, Kirby gained some moderate success with Kirby Star Allies on Switch, with a Metacritic score of 73. Kirby has continued his success with a Metacritic score 85 in of Kirby and the Forgotten Land where Kirby gained extra notoriety for eating cars.

Now Reddit user rc1246 has Kirby eating Pokemon. In their illustration, Game Awards 2022 winner Kirby regards the Pokemon, Gholdengo, with cute puffed cheeks before eating the Pokemon arm first, and finally standing proud as a little golden ball. The result looks like an alternate skin for playing as Kirby in a Smash Bros. game, or like a freshly baked bun.
Other Reddit users commented to say that Kirby looks really good in gold or that they would love to see a crossover with Kirby and Pokemon. This isn’t the first time fans have had this idea of a crossover, with one fan drawing Kirby as a lot of Pokemon. Due to the cute and friendly designs of Kirby and many of the Pokemon, the crossover seems like a natural fit, and if someone had no prior knowledge of Kirby they would be forgiven for mistaking him as one of the hundreds of Pokemon.
While not the focus of the piece, the drawing does also highlight the horror of Kirby’s power. Gholdengo understandably looks utterly terrified in the scene where he is being ingested. The Kirby series paints him as a cute friendly guy, with a ton of cute characters joining Kirby in Kirby’s Dream Buffet. However, the fact that he eats his enemies with such ease while maintaining the cute facade is somewhat horrific. This balance of cute and powerful does lend itself to a very fun experience, however, which is likely a big factor to the Kirby franchise continuing his mainstream success of late. With Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe set to release in 2023, fans can expect to see much more of Kirby soon.
