Recently, one Elden Ring fan created a rather unique piece of fan art. Specifically, user notramilopak on Reddit showed off their interpretation of what a Soulsborne game set in the Warhammer 40K universe would look like. The grimdark nature of Warhammer 40K would appear to fit well with the gritty settings that FromSoftware usually creates in the lore of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring. However, this concept led to a heated debate in the comments of notramilopak’s post.

Some Elden Ring players were hyped at the idea of a Warhammer 40K crossover, imagining units from the Tyranid, Ork, and Chaos Factions of the tabletop wargame making for some great bosses and normal enemies. Others believed that while a sci-fi Soulsborne title would be interesting, Warhammer wasn’t the setting for it. The argument was made that if a Warhammer Soulsborne featured the iconic Space Marines, then it would be tough to make regular enemies feel as powerful as they do in other FromSoftware titles.

This is because not many individual creatures could take out a Space Marine in three or four hits as a zombie can in Elden Ring, for example. The toughness of Space Marines usually has games such as the upcoming Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 showing the enhanced warriors obliterating waves of orks, tyranids, and other enemies. This would mean that while the bosses of a Warhammer 40K Soulsborne game could be incredible, it would be difficult to plan out the rest of the game while maintaining the difficulty fans would expect.

To solve this, one commenter pointed out that, rather than let the playable character be a Space Marine, a player could instead make their own Imperial Guard, a much weaker character from the Warhammer 40K setting. However, even in games with Imperial Guard as the focus, such as the new action title from Vermintide developers Darktide, the gameplay of Warhammer 40K titles often focuses on horde-based combat, throwing as many enemies at the player as possible rather than making a group of two or three foes feel devastating.

Elden Ring is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
