Souza fouled off a 97 mph Chris Sale fastball toward the Rays’ dugout on the first-base side. The ball went through a small opening in the netting in front of the camera well, striking the female fan near her left eye.

Souza was clearly distraught and struck out three pitches later to end the inning. The start of the eighth inning was delayed as medical staff tended to the woman. Souza went into the stands to check on her before she was placed onto a stretcher and taken to an area hospital.
The Rays have not provided an update on the fan’s condition.

The fan’s injury came after Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier and second baseman Logan Forsythe both left Friday’s game following a fourth-inning collision. The Rays said Forsythe has a bruised left hip and lower leg injury. Kiermaier is still being evaluated.
The White Sox won 1-0 on Melky Cabrera’s RBI single in the top of the ninth inning.
