While there’s no word on if Nintendo would ever take the franchise in that direction, a talented modder by the name of Kaze Emanuar has done exactly that, creating what he affectionately refers to as “Super Mario 64 Maker.” As fans will surely gather from the title, the mod gives players the tools to create their own Super Mario 64 levels, complete with all the items and features that make the classic game’s stages such a joy to explore.

For those interested in the idea, Emanuar’s YouTube channel has just posted a brand new walkthrough of how Super Mario 64 Maker works, with the modder designing his own level complete with eight red coins and a star. The footage shows just how easy it is to sculpt your own Mario levels, with Emanuar highlighting a simple tools menu that lets you scroll through several of the game’s most iconic objects and place them around the map.

For example, he decides early on to craft a pit of lava that will contain two red coins, with the player having to use a Koopa shell to ride over the hazardous liquid and gather the two collectibles. To do this, he first sculpts the pit before scrolling through his easy to navigate menu until he comes across a red coin star. He simply places this in the middle of the map, before skimming down to the red coins and placing two of them quickly and easily in the lava. He concludes his level by finding the item box area of the menu and changing the type to four, indicating that he wants it to contain a rideable Koopa shell. Once complete, he loads up the level, runs over to the box, hits it to reveal the Koopa shell, jumps on top of the object, grabs the two coins, and the star immediately pops up, indicating the level is complete.

Overall, it looks like Kaze Emanuar has crafted a supremely intuitive and easy to use modding tool that allows players to efficiently design their dream Super Mario 64 levels. He also leaves a link to Super Mario 64 Maker in the video’s description, so eager fans can hop right in and give the tool a go if they’re interested.
