Trea Turner is in the discussion for the top overall pick, and since he’s eligible at 2B in addition to SS, he’s the clear top player at both positions. He’s in a tier by himself, and the dropoff to Ozzie Albies is noticeable. That’s not to say Albies or any other top-10 2B is a bad player, but it’s unlikely they give you the all-around production of Turner.
DOMINATE YOUR DRAFT: Fantasy Alarm Ultimate Draft Guide
That’s fine, though, if you know how to draft the position. Second base is a bit of a catch-all, meaning it’s the type of position you often fill to address specific category needs. Need steals? Target Whit Merrifield in the early-middle rounds or Jazz Chisholm a little later. Want power? Marcus Semien is an early-round option, and Brandon Lowe or Jorge Polanco can help several rounds later. Worried about average? Then make sure to grab Adam Frazier or Jean Segura in the later rounds.
With plenty of potential breakouts, like Brendan Rodgers, and bounce-backs, like DJ LeMahieu, always looming, second base should keep you on your toes all year. Unless you get one of the stars early, it’s likely you’ll be considering mixing and matching, at least to some degree, much of the season. Find the hot hitters or the guys who can provide the category you need most, and you should be just fine.
