CALL TO THE ‘PEN
Adam Ottavino was back in the closer’s role for the Rockies on Friday, nailing down a 6-4 Colorado victory. Ottavino, who complained of triceps soreness on Thursday, allowed a hit during his scoreless outing. John Axford would likely spell Ottavino if he needs another rest, but it looks like the first-year closer is fine for now. … Pittsburgh’s Mark Melancon converted his second straight save opportunity with a perfect ninth inning against Arizona. Tony Watson is still worth keeping on your roster, but Melancon is clearly trending in the right direction after a slow start. … Sean Doolittle (left shoulder) threw 15 pitches in a successful bullpen session on Friday, but he’s still at least three weeks away from returning to the A’s. Tyler Clippard will continue to close in the meantime. … Jonathan Papelbon was unavailable on Friday becase of an illness. It’s unclear how long he’ll be sidelined. Ken Giles is expected to handle closer duties in the interim. … Yimi Garcia threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first save of the year on Friday. Garcia has been lights out this year, posting a 0.93/0.62 line with 16:3 K-to-BB ratio in just 9.2 innings. It’s unclear if Garcia will get another save chance, but he’s pitched better than any other Dodgers’ reliever this season. Joel Peralta wasn’t used on Friday after walking two in a non-save situation on Thursday, so it’s possible Garcia has jumped him on the depth chart. He’s worth a pickup.
WEATHER WATCH
There could be several delays or postponements around the league today. The Royals-White Sox game is the most likely to see showers (92 percent), but Cubs-Reds (81), Astros-A’s (66), and Giants-Rockies (48) could also get some rain. (Update: The Royals-White Sox game has been postponed.)
